On our first visit to Honduras last year, we picked out a comforting yet delicious coffee from San Andres.

San Andres is a small municipality that belongs to the Honduran state of Lempira. It has a population of 15,000 people focused on coffee production, making it the community’s first source of income.

It is located on the “Pico Congolon” at about 1,650 m.a.s.l., surrounded by two biological reserves, Reserva Biologica de Opalaca and Reserva Biologica Volvan Pacavita. The high altitude create the ideal conditions for cultivating sweet, dense cherry. Producers in the region usually cultivate varietals such as Pacas, Catuai, Lempira and IHCAFE 90 on farms that are approximately 0.5 to 20 hectares in size.

Coffee from San Andres continues to be processed under traditional farming methods and is 100% sun dried. Most farmers in Honduras use mechanical dryers to dry parchment but farmers in San Andres continue to use the sun drying method to carefully and slowly dry parchment. This allows the coffee to acquire its homogeneity of colour appearance and develop its unique, delightful, sweet, and chocolatey flavour.

This fully washed lot is sourced from 25 producers around the Lempira region. We enjoy this coffee for its sweet and comforting flavors, reminding us of milk chocolate, apples and a brown sugar finish.
